1. Referral Fee (by Region)

The referral fee is TikTok Shop's primary revenue from sellers. It's charged as a percentage of the item's selling price (before shipping). The key thing to understand: fee structures differ by region.

Region Referral Fee Payment Processing
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US โ€” Most Categories6%Included โœ“
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US โ€” Jewelry & Accessories5%Included โœ“
๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ US โ€” New Seller (first 30 days)3%Included โœ“
๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง UK โ€” Most Categories9%+2.9% + $0.30
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EU5 โ€” Most Categories9%+2.9% + $0.30
๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ EU5 โ€” New Seller (first 60 days)4%+2.9% + $0.30

Critical insight: In the US, the 6% referral fee is a unified fee that includes payment processing. There is no separate payment processing charge. Many calculators and guides incorrectly list an additional 1โ€“2% payment processing fee โ€” this is outdated. In the UK and EU, payment processing is charged separately on top of the 9% referral fee.

The referral fee is calculated on: Customer Payment + Platform Discounts โˆ’ Tax. This means TikTok-funded discounts do not reduce your fee base.

2. Payment Processing Fee

US sellers: No separate charge. Payment processing is included in the 6% referral fee. This is a significant advantage โ€” Shopify charges 2.9% + $0.30 on top of its commission.

UK/EU sellers: Payment processing is charged separately at approximately 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, on top of the 9% referral fee. This means UK/EU sellers' total per-order platform fees are closer to 12%.

3. FBT Fulfillment Fee ($3.58/unit)

Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) is TikTok's answer to Amazon FBA. You ship inventory to TikTok's warehouses, and they handle storage, packing, and shipping to customers.

The per-unit fee varies by item size and weight. Current rates for 2026:

  • Single-unit orders: $3.58 per unit
  • Multi-unit orders: $2.86+ per unit (24% discount vs 2025)
  • Oversize items: $5.75+ per unit
  • Hub Placement: $0.31 per unit (optional, for multi-warehouse distribution)

This includes:

  • Warehousing and storage
  • Pick, pack, and ship
  • Standard delivery to customer

When to use FBT: If your items are small/lightweight and you're shipping more than 50 orders/day, FBT can be cost-effective. For larger items or lower volume, self-fulfillment or a professional 3PL like ShipBob or Flexport may be cheaper.

4. Creator Commission (0โ€“30%)

This isn't a TikTok platform fee โ€” it's the commission you offer to TikTok creators who promote your product through affiliate links. It's entirely optional but is one of the main growth channels on TikTok Shop.

Typical commission ranges:

  • 10โ€“15%: Standard for most product categories
  • 15โ€“20%: Competitive rate that attracts more creators
  • 20โ€“30%: Aggressive rate for product launches or viral push campaigns

Pro tip: Start at 15% and increase only if you're not getting enough creator interest. Many sellers overpay on commission during launch, hurting their margins permanently.

5. Refund Administration Fee

When a customer returns a product, TikTok charges a refund administration fee of 20% of the original referral fee, capped at $5 per SKU (since May 2025). This is one of the most overlooked costs.

Example: You sell a $50 item in the US (6% = $3.00 referral fee). Customer gets a refund โ†’ TikTok keeps $0.60 (20% of $3.00). On high-return-rate products, this adds up quickly.

What's the Total Cost of Selling on TikTok Shop?

For a typical US seller using creator affiliates and self-fulfillment:

Referral Fee (incl. payment processing)6%
Creator Commission15%
Total Platform Fees~21%

+ Product cost (COGS) + Shipping/fulfillment

For every $30 sale, around $6.30 goes to platform + creator fees before product cost and shipping. For UK/EU sellers, add another ~3% for separate payment processing, bringing the total closer to 24%.

This is why understanding your margins with a profit calculator is essential before listing products.

Tips to Maximize Your TikTok Shop Profit

  1. Choose the right category. If your product fits in multiple categories, choose the one with the lower referral fee.
  2. Negotiate supplier pricing. Even a $0.50 reduction in COGS can add up to significant profit at scale.
  3. Start with self-fulfillment. Only switch to FBT when your order volume justifies the per-unit cost.
  4. Use our reverse pricing tool. Set your target margin and let the calculator tell you the minimum selling price.
  5. Monitor fee changes. TikTok Shop updates its fee structure periodically โ€” bookmark this page for the latest rates.
